AIMING to bring smiles to the faces of children, community activist, Tabata Hicken, along with other members of the ‘Friends from the Logos Hope’, hosted a book and toy distribution event on December 18 and 26 at Leopold Street, Charlestown and at ‘A’ Field Sophia, Georgetown.

During an interview with this newspaper, Hicken said the event catered for children from as young as two years to as old as 13. Moreover, the books covered a vast set of subjects such as Social Studies, Science, English and Mathematics.

“Books are a gift that can continuously be used,” Hicken affirmed. He emphasised that while toys are tangible, books are a lifetime commodity that can benefit someone in many ways. Because it was the festive season, they could not divert from the tradition of gifting toys and embracing the love and warmth, Hicken said.

He reflected on the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic on the education system. Hicken highlighted that these detrimental effects cannot be solved by one person or organisation, noting that it requires co-operation from everyone.

Given the fact that school attendance dropped significantly during the pandemic, Hicken said the organisaion is on a mission to provide resources to help children to get back on track.
Survival Supermarket, Gafoors, Guyana Stockfeeds Inc., Jai Signs and Auto Design, and Mohamed’s Enterprise, are just a few that entities that Hicken extended his gratitude to.

Hicken said the organisation welcomes any donation from the public. Furthermore, he extended a welcome mat to all, stating that he be contacted at the South Liliendaal Community Centre Ground at ‘A’ Field Sophia, Georgetown, where the organisation is located.
