THIRTY-eight-year-old Orin Jerrick, who had confessed to stabbing Plaisance minibus driver Gavin Fiffee to death in 2014, will serve two years in prison for the crime.
Jerrick was on Tuesday sentenced by Justice Simone Morris-Ramlall, who is currently presiding over the current criminal session at the Demerara High Court.
Last month, Jerrick, who was originally charged with murder, opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.
The indictment read that on July 31, 2014, at the Plaisance mini-bus park at Regent Street and Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, Jerrick unlawfully killed Fiffee.
On Tuesday, the judge imposed a 10-year sentence, and ordered that prison authorities deduct the eight years Jerrick had spent on remand. This means he will remain behind bars for two more years.
In 2016, Jerrick went on trial before High Court Judge Navindra Singh, who had imposed a 28-year jail term after a 12- member jury returned a unanimous guilty verdict.
However, his attorney successfully appealed the conviction and sentence on his behalf at the Court of Appeal.
The attorney had argued that Justice Singh failed to adequately put his client’s case of self-defence to the jury for consideration.
In 2020, the Court of Appeal had set aside the conviction and sentence, and ordered a retrial for Jerrick.
It was reported that at about 17:45 hours on the day in question, Fiffee, 30, of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara, was involved in an argument with Jerrick at the Plaisance Bus Park during which he was stabbed to his chest.
Fiffee succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC)
Fiffee had reportedly objected to Jerrick urinating on his minibus, which resulted in an argument.
