IN keeping with President, Dr Irfaan Ali’s National Beautification Project, members of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and representatives of the Ministry of Public Works on Sunday collaborated in carrying out ongoing beautification works along Church Street in the vicinity of Guyana Stores.
The team was seen laying colure blocks in the median that separates the roadways.
President Ali had launched the “Urban Beautification Plan” since his time as Minister of Tourism in 2013.
Since then, President Ali had called for wide involvement, including from the private sector, to get involved in the exercise, noting that the aim is to clean up the city so as to attract more visitors to Guyana.
“This is an excellent opportunity for us to come together and take action. There is no denying of the benefits of a beautification project. In Chile for example, a depressed area was transformed with a coat of paint and some flowers; this uplifted an entire area,” The president said while he was Minister of Tourism in 2013.
Now, President Ali’s beautification project includes “Lamaha Walk”, built parallel to Lamaha Street. Since December 2021 when the President announced the project, works on Lamaha Walk have progressed. The beautification works comes even as Georgetown’s City Hall has neglected much of its duties to citizens of the capital city.
