A VANDAL removed the Little Guyana street sign at the corner of Lefferts Blvd. and Liberty Ave, New York, sometime on Tuesday night.

The sign was unveiled amidst much fanfare by Mayor of New York City, Bill de Blasio, in June 2021. A CCTV camera from a neighbouring store captured a male (with red cap, black shirt, and reddish jeans) jumping down with sign in hand, from a newspaper stand (holder).

The stand, there for many years, stood next to the post facilitating access to the sign on the post.

Assemblywoman Jenifer Rajkumar, in a statement, condemned the outrageous theft of the sign.

“The beautiful stretch of Liberty Avenue known as Little Guyana is a source of pride for everyone in South Queens. We were filled with that pride when we came together as a community for the street co-naming ceremony to unveil the sign. For all those appalled at the loss of the sign, know this: No one can ever take away our pride and joy in Little Guyana. I thank the 106th Precinct for investigating this matter,” the release said.

Anyone with information on this theft can contact Crime Stoppers at 800-577-TIPS. You can remain anonymous, the statement concluded.
