MONTERREY, Mexico (CMC) – While they did not walk away with official awards, Reggae Girlz forward, Khadija Shaw, and midfielder Drew Spence have been named in the Best XI of the just concluded CONCACAF Women’s Championship.
CONCACAF on Tuesday identified the two among 11 players who stood out the most in their respective positions.
Shaw, 25, notched three goals from 14 shots during the tournament to help Jamaica qualify for the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the Olympic play-in versus Canada. She collected three steals as well.
CONCACAF also said the Reggae Girlz were on their way to their second straight World Cup thanks, in part, to English-born Jamaican professional footballer Spence.
The 29-year-old “led the tournament with an eye-popping 15 steals”, and also had three clearances on top of a goal and an assist.
The French-speaking Caribbean nation of Haiti, whom Jamaica beat to secure a World Cup berth, were also represented in the Best XI in 18-year-old midfielder Melchie Dumornay.
She was a headache for the opposing defence during Haiti’s campaign – which included a first-ever CWC victory against Mexico (3-0) – with five steals and two clearances while completing almost 82 per cent of her passes.
Her playmaking led to a penalty in Haiti’s opener versus the United States while against Mexico she completed 30 of 31 passes.
The teenager was also the recipient of an official award – the Young Player Award.
