(Jamaica Observer) – MINISTER of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Kamina Johnson Smith, is denying the Jamaican Government’s involvement in the detention of Popcaan at Heathrow Airport in London on Tuesday.
Johnson Smith was responding to a tweet by booking agent Shelly-Ann Curran who raised concerns after Popcaan’s detention and suggested the Jamaican Government had been party to the decision.

“Hon Min @kaminajsmith there is a situation in UK involving @PopcaanMusic where he is detained and asked to do so by JA Govt … we need to know why ?” Curran tweeted.
The minister of foreign affairs, on Wednesday, used social media to set the record straight.

“Dear @ShellyCurran The Govt of JA has not requested that @popcaanmusic be detained, but there are many reasons why a traveller may be detained. I have asked the High Commission to enquire into the matter as early as they are able, so that they may advise,” Johnson Smith responded.

According to Johnson Smith, Popcaan was subsequently released.
“We also conveyed to the Home Office a letter from his attorney-at-law who may update the public as seen fit,” she tweeted.

Popcaan, who travelled to London, is billed for a concert at National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham on July 10. On Tuesday, he posted a snap to his Instagram story highlighting his predicament.
“They just give mi dis paper and detain mi because of information that was sent by my country that I should be stopped every time I’m here. I wonder why? Mr Prime Minister of Jamaica, I would like to draw your attention to this once again,” said Popcaan in the clip.

This is not the first time that Popcaan has had issues with immigration in the United Kingdom.
In January, the entertainer also took to social media to reveal that he had been held in immigration for a number of hours.

“I would like to know why someone with authority in Jamaica send information to England immigration that I’m a gang leader and I got charge with firearm. This is not cool at all from my own country, why I have to be sitting in immigration for over 3 hours??” he tweeted at the time.

Popcaan came to prominence in 2010 with his mentor Vybz Kartel on the popular song, ‘Clarks’. His subsequent hits include ‘Only Man She Want’, ‘Party Shot’, and ‘Dream’.
