Businessman dies in accident

A 54-year-old businessman has lost his life after reportedly being struck down by a 19-year-old motorcyclist at First Avenue, Bartica.

According to police reports, Premnauth Persaud of First Avenue, Bartica, was purportedly standing on the western parapet of the avenue at around 22:00 hrs on Saturday, when the motorcyclist crashed into him.

Specifically, it is alleged that the motorcyclist with a pillion rider, while riding along the avenue, lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the victim.

The motorcyclist has since been identified as Eric David of Three Mile, Bartica, while the pillion rider was identified as Phebeon Stanford of Carabese Hill.

David and Stanford were picked up in a conscious state while Persaud was unconscious. Persaud was rushed to the Bartica Hospital by the police and was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

David and Standford were examined by a doctor and sent away. The motorcycle was lodged for examination by a licensing and certifying officer.

A breathalyser test was conducted on David and no trace of alcohol was found in his system. He is presently in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Persaud’s body is at the Bartica Regional Hospital’s morgue awaiting a post-mortem examination.
