IN celebration of the lives of the late Presidents Dr. Cheddi Jagan (1918-1997) and Janet Jagan (1920-2009), Collin Croal, Minister of Housing and Water and Parliamentary Representative for Region One, joined Region One residents for a wreath-laying ceremony Saturday last.

The event was held at the Jagan memorial monument at White Water in the Mabaruma sub-district, which was commissioned by the minister last year.

In his remarks, Minister Croal stressed the work of the Jagans in delivering development, women’s and workers’ rights to the nation. He also underscored their fight for democracy, which should never be forgotten, as we strive to achieve ‘One Guyana’.

On Friday night, the minister also participated in a night of reflection at Arakaka in the Martakai sub-district.

The contributions of both former Presidents are too many to forget. And, according to Croal, it was for that reason that the month of March is significant, since it is one which marks the birth and death of Dr. Jagan, and the death of Mrs. Jagan.

“They were the founders of the country’s first mass political movement and unquestionably the leading political figures in the history of Guyana for over the last 70 years. Through their tireless efforts, the small country of Guyana experienced a wealth of benefits, social advancement and economic prosperity,” Croal noted.
