THE Queen’s Baton arrives in Guyana today on its journey around the Commonwealth before returning to Birmingham ahead of this year’s Commonwealth Games.

The Queen’s Baton Relay has been a feature since the inaugural Cardiff 1958 Commonwealth Games.

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Ret’d) Mark Phillips will join other officials of Government, Diplomats and the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) at a cocktail reception at the residence of the British High Commissioner, to usher in the start of the Queen’s Baton Relay in Guyana.

The Relay began on October 7, 2021, with Her Majesty The Queen placing her Message to the Commonwealth into the Baton.

President of GOA, Kalam Juman-Yassin will officially welcome the Baton as it arrives at its 46th destination.

According to GOA, during its time in Guyana, the Queen’s Baton Relay will visit Linden, Iwokrama River Lodge, River View and Annai and will experience historical locations in Region 10, the Canopy Walkway and the hinterland.

During its stay in Guyana, the organisers have planned a busy schedule of activities and events with opportunities to showcase untold stories from Baton-bearers, athletes, and young people who are striving for change in their community.

The Queen’s Baton will be carried by representatives of UNICEF and the British High Commission, athletes, schoolchildren and several persons in the indigenous communities.
