Teacher recovering after horrific accident

MONIX Hetemeyer was enjoying a quiet meal with a friend, al fresco, late one afternoon at ‘Big B’s Restaurant’ on Pope Street, New Amsterdam, when, suddenly, the driver of a motorcar changed course and made straight for her, leaving her with severe injuries to both her legs.

And, despite the best efforts of teams of medical doctors here, Monix’s left leg had to be amputated below the knee. Needless to say, the loss of the limb has left her and her entire family severely traumatised.

But in the midst of this life-changing experience, Monix’s spirits, strength and trust in God have proven to be unshakable, as she remains positive, and even more committed to accomplishing her goals, in spite of her circumstances.

Monix’s strength and optimism may be inspiring, but the stark reality is that she must now adjust to her new ‘normal’, and face challenges she’s never had before. This new position will affect her socially, mentally, emotionally and financially.

The scene of the accident

Monix has been a giver for most of her life, and is known to be a great friend. Due to this fact, her friends, Petra Richmond, Sheanta Henry, and Dionne Mentore have organised a GoFundMe project to provide some amount of financial support to Monix and her family during this time, given the long-term challenges that are ahead. Having a bit of financial support will be extremely helpful, as it will cover such things as daily expenses, transportation, the cost of getting prosthetics, homecare and additional costs that will be incurred from time to time.

Prior to the accident, which occurred on the evening of February 20, Monix, a married mother of two underage children, was bursting with life and laughter. Her life was dedicated to the service of God and the community.

With respect to her heavenly commitments, she served as a Worship Leader, Dancer, Musician and Inspirational Speaker. In her professional life, Monix served as a Graduate Senior Assistant Mistress, with special focus on Spanish at the New Amsterdam Secondary (Multilateral) School. She is also a member of the Board of Governors at the New Amsterdam Technical Institute (NATI), a Lecturer at the University of Guyana, Founder and Educator at the Teacher’s Initiative Forum, Trainer at the Guyana Council of Organisations for Persons with Disabilities, and CEO of Dance Accessories and Hidden Treasures Online Boutique.
