Rescheduled Republic Cup softball set for Sunday

… Trophy Stall to sponsor trophies

FOLLOWING a one-week delay, occasioned by a soft outfield due to torrential rains, the Georgetown Softball Cricket League Inc. is hoping for better weather conditions this Sunday to stage its much-anticipated Republic Cup softball tournament.

The Togetherness Park at Liliendaal, Greater Georgetown is expected to be abuzz when Regal Legends tangle with archrivals Mike’s Wellman for championship honours in the Over-50 Division.
Preceding what is expected to be a heated affair, Regal Masters and a Select XI will clash in the Over-40 category from 10.00hrs.

Regal Legends have had the better of their counterparts over the past few years and this dates back prior before both joined the Over-50 ranks. However, Mike’s Wellman have a score to settle with their opponents and are hoping to turn the tables this time around.

Led by veteran all-rounder Wayne Jones, who still has the capability to destroy any bowling attack, and including the versatile Lloyd Ruplall and Lakhram ‘Mike’ Singh, whose underrated leg-spin can cause problems at times, Mike’s Wellman are looking to stop Regal Legends’ invincibility.

Stopping Regal Legends, however, seems an insurmountable task with the reigning champions possessing players of the calibre of David Harper, Parsram ‘Pacer’ Persaud, Mahendra Hardyal, Unis Usuff, Rudolph ‘Gussy’ Baker, Eion ‘Rapper’ Abel and Laurie ‘Tony’ Singh.

The day’s action is scheduled to get underway at 10.00hrs with Regal Masters (Over-40s) taking on a Select XI. Regal Masters will include the experienced Chien Gittens, Patrick Rooplall, Mohamed Ayume, Samuel Kingston, Ricky Roopnarine and Lakhram Roopnarine.

Sunday’s tournament is being used as preparation for local players who will be participating in the annual Florida Cup competition from March 31 to April 2.

Meanwhile, tickets for the annual fundraising take-away Bar-B-Que, organised by the Regal cricket teams, to aid in their participation in the Florida Cup, will be on sale from any player at $1500 each.
Trophies for Sunday’s two games are acquired through the kind generosity of Ramesh Sunich of Trophy Stall.
