Man gets 8 months jail for breaking into house

FOUR weeks after pleading guilty to break and enter and larceny, thirty-year-old Christopher Gonsalves was, on Monday, sentenced to eight months in prison.

He made his first court appearance before Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on January 31, 2022. He claimed that at the time he committed the crime, he was under the influence. After entering the guilty plea, he informed the court that he had returned the stolen items to the victim.

He admitted that on January 21, 2022, at Camp Street, he broke into the dwelling home of Otas Lobahan and stole a Nigerian passport, two bags, a laptop, a cellphone and other items totalling $253,500, property of Shawnet Daly.

According to reports, on the day in question, Lobahan’s girlfriend informed him that someone had broken into the apartment. After discovering that items were missing, a police report was made and Gonsalves was later arrested.

During his sentence hearing on Monday, the prosecutor told the court that Gonsalves is a “menace to society” and should be punished for his wrong doings.
After listening to the facts of the case and the prosecutor’s submission, Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus handed down the eight-month sentence.
