Two more COVID-19 deaths, 53 new cases recorded

THE Ministry of Health has reported that two more persons who tested positive for COVID-19 have died, taking the country’s overall death toll to 1,210.

A 71-year-old fully vaccinated man from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) and a 52-year-old unvaccinated man from Region Three (Essequibo Islands- West Demerara) are Guyana’s latest fatalities.

There are currently 924 active COVID-19 cases in Guyana, following the addition of 53 new cases on February 19, 2022.

The 53 newly confirmed cases were recorded Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Six, Seven and Nine.

Regions One recorded four new cases; Region Two recorded six new cases; Region Three recorded two new cases, Region Four recorded 12 new cases; Region Five recorded four new cases;

Region Six recorded 11 new cases; Region Seven recorded one new case; and Region Nine recorded 13 new cases.

The country has now recorded a total of 62,638 cases since March 2020.

Of the active cases, 12 persons are in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the National Infectious Diseases Hospital, Liliendaal; 71 are in institutional isolation; 841 are in home isolation, and 10 are in institutional quarantine.

Many of the persons infected with the virus are said to be asymptomatic, that is, they are not exhibiting symptoms.

The updated COVID–19 Emergency Measures are in force until Feb 28, 2021. They may be extended or amended by notice of the Minister of Health, after an assessment of the prevailing public health conditions of the pandemic.

As per the current measures, all persons are required to wear face masks when leaving their homes, and physical distancing and adequate sanitisation are recommended.
