FOR Fazim Abdool, a resident of Rosignol, Cross Dam, West Coast Berbice, he lives in the right place: a community rooted in tradition, culture and freedom to do whatever he desires.

The father of two told the Pepperpot Magazine that Rosignol, Cross Dam, is a tranquil place that is always breezy and not congested.

He stated that growing up in the countryside has been good despite hardships.

But it is the perfect cross between rural and urban, where the people live simply as farmers and go about their way of life relaxed.

Abdool added that he likes his privacy and has erected a high fence to fend off prying eyes and he is a poultry farmer who works from home.

He has some layers and ducks.

The father of two stated that, in that section of the village, the people are farmers, cultivating either cash crops or rice and there are poultry, livestock and cattle farmers as well.

He has been living in that part of the community for eight years, but is from Rosignol and has lived all his life there.

Abdool reported that he passed the holidays indoors mostly due to COVID-19, which put a damper on gatherings and street kind of events.

He disclosed that he accepted limited visitors to his home to safeguard himself and family.

The 38-year-old added that it has been difficult to deal with COVID-19 restrictions, but he had to concede because it is better to remain at home unless it is necessary to go out.

“The people in the village shared whatever they had on Christmas and it was nice. Other than that, people remained rooted in their homes and looked on,” he said.

Abdool related that the place is very dark at night and street lights are needed to illuminate the place as a form of security for the locals, who have been plagued by break-ins and thefts.

He lives a very quiet kind of life with his wife and children in Cross Dam, Rosignol, and it is all he wanted, contentment.

The homemaker/cleaner
Lilawattie Rajkumar, better known as Babita, is finally living rent-free in her own home and it was her wish for a long time.

So she will be ringing in the new year at her own home and that is enough, even for a brand new year, 2022.

The mother of three told the Pepperpot Magazine that for the past year she has been living in her own house.

Previously, she resided in another section of the village where she was renting. Paying $30,000 per month was not an easy task.

The 42-year-old stated that her husband is a pastry maker at Nature’s Own Bakery at Number Three village, West Coast Berbice.

She is the sweeper/cleaner at the same business place and after chores she was preparing to go to work.

Rajkumar added that she has a 22-year-old daughter who works within Rosignol and her eldest son is 23 years old and he is married.

Her last born is 10 years old and he would assist with the chores and goes to school three days per week.

She was rearing some ducks, chickens, and turkeys, but they lost most of the poultry during the flood.

Only two turkeys survived, but they have a pet dog and she has two puppies, they will keep for security purposes.

When the team visited, Rajkumar was cooking some food for the dogs on the fireside, under the house; that pot of food will last them for days, once frozen.

This villager is also a farmer, planting cash crops such as tomatoes, peppers, ochroes, calaloo, married man pork, thick leaf thyme, boulanger and other crops.

Rajkumar told the Pepperpot Magazine that she plans to enclose the downstairs which will be converted to the kitchen and will construct a modern washroom facility, since pit latrines are outdated.

She related that all her shopping is done at Rosignol Market area and she is quite happy to see a new year and in her own home.

Her eldest son Rasheed Karim is a sportsman who was once a top performer in that region and she is of the hope that her youngest will “follow pattern” and excel at exams.
