Labourer remanded for allegedly stealing vendor’s cash

A 40-year-old labourer who allegedly stole $450,000 from a Water Street vendor was on Friday remanded to prison by Magistrate Leron Daly.

Mohamed Asif Shameer appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court and denied that on December 29, 2021, at Water Street, Stabroek, he stole $450,000 in cash, the property of Ryan Granville.

He was remanded to prison until January 7, 2022.

According to reports, on the day in question Granville hired Shameer to clean and dispose of garbage from his stall. It is alleged that while cleaning the stall, Shameer stole the vendor’s money, which was hidden in a bag, and made good of his escape.

A report was made to the police and Shammer was later arrested. Under caution, he reportedly admitted to stealing the money. However, only $7,000 was recovered in his possession when he was searched by the police.
