LINDEN resident Gavin Martin was, on Tuesday, sentenced to three years in jail and fined $1.8 million by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan after pleading guilty to a trafficking in narcotics charge.
Martin appeared before the Diamond Magistrates’ Court and admitted that on December 24, at Peter’s Hall, East Bank Demerara, he had 2.280 kilograms of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
The chief magistrate, before imposing the sentence, cited the fact that the accused used the first opportunity he got to plead guilty.
According to reports, on the day in question, Martin was nabbed by ranks from the Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU) with a salt bag that contained five parcels of cannabis.
He identified himself as ‘Emmanuel Martin’ to the ranks and was arrested. A further investigation revealed that his first name is ‘Gavin’ and that he had used his brother’s name. His brother is a serving member of the joint services.
