A 24-year-old painter was on Wednesday committed to stand trial at the Berbice High Court for the rape of a 13-year-old girl.

Birball Soochit, of D’Edward Village, West Coast Berbice (WCB), was on trial, in camera, before Magistrate Peter Hugh at the Blairmont Magistrate’s  Court.

Soochit is charged for allegedly engaging in sexual penetration with a child under the age of 16 on May 28, 2020, at Number Four Village, WCB.

He is currently out on $50,000 bail, but the magistrate on Thursday ruled that a sufficient case was made out against him; enough for him to stand trial at the High Court.
