AMBASSADOR of Cambodia to Cuba, Ban Borom, warmly received Guyana’s Ambassador to Cuba, Halim Majeed, at the Cambodia’s Mission in Havana on Tuesday

The two ambassadors discussed several current international issues, including COP26 but focused mainly on bilateral relations and examined ways and means of fostering closer ties in the present global economic framework.

Ambassador Majeed was particularly interested in Cambodia’s economic pragmatism and wondered how similar it is (or different) to Singapore’s model of economic development.

Cambodia is the current chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Group and is expanding developmental ties with Japan, China and Vietnam, among other countries in that region.

Ambassador Majeed recalled the historical ties between the two countries that were initiated by the leader of the People’s Progressive Party — former President Cheddi Jagan — who had always expressed Guyana’s solidarity and friendship with the Cambodian people.

Ambassador Ban inquired about the economic policies of the Government of Guyana and wanted to have an understanding of how government’s philosophy impacted national development.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Ambassador Majeed took the opportunity to present Ambassador Ban with several speeches that were delivered on specific occasions by President, Dr. Irfaan Ali.
