GUYANA will face Nicaragua today in the Dominican Republic, in a must-win game in order to advance to the CONCACAF U20 Championship.
The U20 Golden Jaguars secured four points from their two matches played, having defeated the US Virgin Islands 5-1, after opening with a goalless stalemate against the Cayman Islands.
However, Nicaragua remain perfect, with a 7-0 win over the USVI to kick-off their campaign, as well as a 2-1 win over the Cayman Islands in their other encounter.
With nothing short of a victory needed today, coach Wayne Dover said Monday’s victory puts the Guyanese men in a solid position to play for a chance of advancing to the CONCACAF U20 Championships.
Omari Glasgow, the team’s captain, scored a hat-trick and had a pair of assists in Guyana’s lone victory in the tournament, and will be Dover’s talisman today.
Following the conclusion of the Qualifiers, a total of 20 teams will participate at the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship in the summer of 2022. This will include: the top four teams from the Qualifiers and the region’s top 16 ranked teams (based on the CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Rankings) who receive a bye to the Championship.
The 2022 CONCACAF Men’s Under-20 Championship will qualify its semi-finalists (four teams) to the FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup Indonesia 2023 and its finalists (two teams) to the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.
