Over $7M in grants disbursed to Reg. 2 Amerindian communities

REGIONAL Chairperson of Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenamm), Vilma De Silva, on Friday, distributed over $7 million in presidential and developmental grants to the toshaos of various Amerindian communities in the region.

During the handing over ceremony held in the boardroom of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC), De Silva said that the grants will aid further development in the communities.

The Village Councils were tasked to come up with beneficial projects for their communities.

Communities benefitting from the Presidential Grant included Bethany, Mashabo, and Wakapau. Bethany was presented with $1.5M, Mashabo received $1.2M and Wakapau – $2M. For development grants, Akawini received $600,000; St. Monica – $600,000; Mashabo Village – $400,000; and Bethany Village – $754,839.

Toshoa of Bethany, Sonia Latchman, said last year’s grant was used to enhance the waterfront of her community. She said the project employed persons living there. According to her, Bethany is currently transforming and the grant will go a long way in helping the community.
