Guyana’s FIBA AmeriCup 3X3 team received a $1M boost from KFC yesterday, as they prepare for the November 12-14 tournament at Bayfront Park in Miami, Florida.
Timothy Thompson, Ryan Stephney, Nikolai Smith and Travis Burnett are the male players, while Spain-based Joy Adams, Petal Leacock, Kesann Charles and Jada Mohan will compete in the female championship of the FIBA AmeriCup 3×3 tournament.
KFC’s sponsorship, according to Guyana Amateur Basketball Federation’s president, Michael Singh, is a testimony of the company’s continued support of basketball at all levels.
According to Singh, “The Beharry Family, they have been the core support of basketball over the years, by extension, the companies that they represent. They have been very supportive at the youth level, for a number of years.”
“Organisations such as mines (GABF), trying to honour two international engagements per year, it’s always tough to put together a budget and honour the commitment of those budgets. KFC has assisted tremendously, and we promise to fly that KFC flag in Miami,” Singh said.
KFC Guyana’s Petall Manasseh, pointed out “at the Beharry Family, we always look to give back to society and we are going to continue giving back. And in doing so, we want to wish our athletes success, and in the event of doing so, we thank all the persons that are supporting us because without them, we can’t do it.”
“Creating opportunities, changing lives and we’re all about that. So we want our athletes to know that we’re always on your side,” Manasseh said.
The inaugural FIBA 3×3 AmeriCup will feature 18 men’s teams and 15 women’s sides.
In the Men’s category, Guyana will face St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago in Group C, while the women’s team will face Trinidad and Tobago, Guatemala, and Jamaica in Group A.
The tournament features countries with extensive international 3×3 experience and some who are wearing their countries’ colours for the first time in competition.
