Youth accused of drug trafficking walks free

A 21-year-old construction worker was, on Monday, freed from a drug trafficking charge by Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court due to insufficient evidence.

Mahendra Persaud was out on $100,000 bail for the offence which alleged that, on January 21, 2020, at Lethem, Central Rupununi, he had 435 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking. He had pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Persaud’s attorney, Bernard DaSliva had made a no-case submission on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to establish its case against his client.

However, the no-case submission was overruled by Magistrate Wilson, who had called on Persaud to lead his defense.

Magistrate Wilson later ruled that the prosecution did not prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

As such, the Magistrate dismissed the case against Persaud.
