SPEAKER of the National Assembly, Manzoor Nadir, added his voice to the recently held panel discussion on the post-pandemic recovery titled: “Transforming the Economy to Combat Climate Change and Promote Sustainable Development,” at the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament (5WCSP) in Vienna, Austria.

Speaker Nadir, during his remarks at the conference on Tuesday, highlighted that climate change is widespread, rapid and intensifying.

The Speaker posited that while there are global decisions to address climate change, many opportunities exist for “cheating” at the national level and not enough international support is given for sustainable development efforts.

Speaker Nadir spoke of the effects of climate change in Guyana, drawing attention to the effects of the 2005 floods and the recent floods.

He said that in 2005, after a few days of rain, floods destroyed over 35 per cent of Guyana’s gross domestic product. And went on to say that recent rainfalls have destroyed an additional five per cent of the economy and affected 20 per cent of the population.

The Speaker concluded his contribution by committing to counter climate change through “green strategies.”

The 5WCSP, which brought together Speakers and delegations from more than 193 countries, concluded on the September 8, 2021.
