Celebrating Amerindian Heritage amid COVID-19

Throughout the month of September each year, Guyana celebrates Amerindian Heritage Month; 30 auspicious days dedicated to honouring our First Peoples.

We would like to think that this year is no different, but it is. As a matter of fact, it is only similar to last year’s observances; virtual, and without the usual fun, frolic and excitement.

Notwithstanding its lack of physical activities, Amerindian Heritage Month in a COVID-19 atmosphere provides the important opportunity for us to reflect and appreciate all that our indigenous peoples have brought to this land, and the manner in which they have safeguarded so much of our natural heritage, most especially our pristine forests and sites.

This year, Guyana is observing Amerindian Heritage Month under the theme, “Maintaining our traditional integrity; celebrating our cultural identity.”

To this end, we share with you, our dearest readers, some images of Amerindian Heritage Month 2021 being observed within the existing COVID-19 guidelines.
