A 35-year-old boat captain was, on Tuesday, remanded to prison for the murder of 34-year-old Mohamed Rai, whose lifeless body was found floating in the Aruka River, Kumaka Waterfront, North West District (NWD). Damian Ming, called “Eddoe” of Canal Bank, Port Kaituma, NWD, appeared via Zoom before Senior Magistrate, Sunil Scarce, at the Mabaruma Magistrate’s Court for the capital offence in relation to Rai’s death.
He was not required to plead to the charge which alleged that he, between August 9 and10, 2021, at Kumaka Waterfront, murdered Rai, called “Shaheed.”
Magistrate Scarce remanded Ming to prison and adjourned the case until December 15.
Rai, a fisherman of Sheet Anchor, East Canje Berbice, was fished out of the river around 08:00 hours on August 12. Police retrieved the body, and it was positively identified by boat captain, Edwin Oneil, and other crew members. An hour later, Rai was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor.
According to the police, Rai’s body was examined and what appeared to be marks of violence were seen on the right side of his neck and right eye.
Rai was reported missing on August 10, by his boat captain. It was reported that he was last seen in the company of Ming.
