FIVE years after 46-year-old Narain Shewnauth called “Hop-Hop” was fatally chopped during a drinking spree, his stepson confessed to the crime and was, on Friday, sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment.
Bisram Ramsamuj was arraigned before Justice Brassington Reynolds at the Berbice High Court for the capital offence of murder, but opted to plead instead to the lesser count of manslaughter.
Ramsamuj admitted that between May 8-9, 2016, at Bloomfield Village, Corentyne, Berbice, he unlawfully killed Shewnauth. The State was represented by prosecutor Abigail Gibbs while Ramsamuj was represented by attorney-at-law Ravindra Mohabir.
According to reports, during the period in question, the family was imbibing at their home when an argument ensued between the two men. During the argument, Ramsamuj armed himself with a cutlass and chopped Shewnauth to his head. Shewnauth was rushed to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
