… Trilateral series set for Toronto

FOLLOWING the aborted Masters Over-50 World Cup, which came to a screeching end in Cape Town, South Africa last year March due to the advent of the COVID-19 pandemic, the teams are set to return to the same venue in November next year.
According to a release from the Cricket West Indies Masters Association (CWIMA), the West Indies Over-50s, who were among the teams participating, are leaving no stone unturned to return for next year’s tournament. Towards this end, the intense preparations will begin in earnest with a trilateral series in Toronto, Canada, featuring the WI Over-50s, the hosts and USA.
West Indies will square off with Canada on Tuesday, August 17 in the first game of the ODI series and against USA the following day.
The semi-final, featuring the second- and third-placed teams will be held on Thursday, August 19 with the first-placed team qualifying for the final. The tournament culminates with the final next Friday and this will be followed by a closing ceremony. All the games will be played at the Danville ground, Mississauga.

The West Indies in the meantime will be involved in two practice matches, the first on Sunday against a select Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) X1 at the Lamoreaux ground, Scarborough on Sunday while they will engage Canada Over-45s at Danville on Monday.
The CWIMA disclosed that it has been seriously crippled in its selection process since it has been advised by the Canadian authorities that it cannot select any players from the Caribbean who are not resident in the USA or Canada
CWIMA pointed out that it had already staged a Masters tournament in Guyana, styled Big Man Cricket, while Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados have their own historical masters’ tournaments which are now played under the CWIMA umbrella.

Windward Islands have also become active under the CWIMA but unfortunately, their players weren’t considered for selection in the triangular series due to Canada not opening its borders for these players until September 7.
Evergreen campaigner Zamin Amin, who led the team in South Africa, will once again be at the helm of the West Indies strong 15-man squad to Canada which also includes former Guyana players, Sudesh and Sunil Dhaniram and Shivnauth Seeram.
The full squad reads: Zamin Amin (captain), Imtiaz Rick Ali, Sudesh Dhaniram, Sunil Dhaniram, Kenny Girdharry, Brijmohan Harihar, Krishna Harricharan, David Malvern, Walter Persaud, Curtis Richards, Rajendra Daniel Sadeo. Shiv Shiwnauth Seeram, Vejai Seonarine, Balwant Roy Singh and Daniel Singh. Seasoned cricket administrator Raj Singh is the manager with Dave Narine as his assistant.
