UNDP Guyana office should state whether its policy adviser was speaking on its behalf and distance itself if he wasn’t

Dear Editor,

FOR many years the UNDP Guyana office, by whatever tool and measurement they use, end up with persons within their employ who manifest in subtle and overt pro-PNC/APNU tendencies. An examination of the work background of some very controversial figures who have been embroiled in serious acts of corruption, theft of state assets and the recent attempt to subvert the will of the Guyanese electorate, the one thing common among them all is that at some point they were under the employ of the UNDP Guyana office.
This brings me to an article published in the Kaieteur News of August 4, 2021 under the caption “Amaila Falls Hydro Project unsuited for Guyana’s electricity demands – Dr. Kwesi Sansculotte-Greenidge”. The newspaper quoted “Dr. Kwesi Sansculotte-Greenidge—a United Nations Development Fund (UNDP) policy adviser” as being critical of the Amaila Falls Hydro Project. This gentleman is a staunch critic of the government and is also related to a high ranking official of the PNC. In my view and in the opinion of many others his position on Amaila Falls Hydro Project is purely political. The UNDP here must therefore state whether he was speaking on their behalf and if not, clearly distance itself from his comments. Its failure to do so would render it incapable of speaking objectively on Guyana’s climate resilience matters given this public political position by one of its employees.
There is a feeling among a section of the populace that the UNDP Guyana office a nestling ground for pro PNC/APNU activists.

All for your consideration,

Erin Northe
