FIVE years after Henry Mendonca, a Venezuelan national was fatally stabbed, his drinking buddy, was on Friday sentenced to three years, five months and 22 days imprisonment for the crime.
Toney Rampersaud was sentenced by Justice Gino Persaud at the Essequibo High Court.
In March, Rampersaud was tried for the capital offence of murder but was found guilty of the lesser count of manslaughter by a 12-member jury.
He was convicted for unlawfully killing Mendonca on November 19, 2016, at Eteringbang Landing, on the Cuyuni River.
According to a police report, the two men, who’d both resided in Venezuela, came to Guyana and were drinking at Eteringbang Landing when they had a misunderstanding. It was during the argument that Rampersaud is said to have broken a bottle and stabbed Mendonca twice in the abdomen. Mendonca was taken to the San Martin Hospital in Venezuela, where he was pronounced dead on arrival
