THE GUYANA Chess Federation (GCF) is set to run off two competitions this weekend, including the first female Chesskid competition and the three-day Independence Chess Open.
The events will attract beginners and senior participants both online and over the board.
The Independence Open will be a six-round Swiss System FIDE rated battle. It is scheduled to be held at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence over a period of three days. After today’s start, chess players will return for games on Sunday and on Wednesday – Independence Day.
Persons interested in registering for the over-the-board event, which should attract a number of big names, are asked to contact GCF Director of Tournaments, Rashad Hussain on telephone number 658-3004.
Former National junior champions Andre Jagnandan and Joshua Gopaul and several other top players, including a few female players, have already registered for the event.
Hussain said that some $60 000 in cash and prizes will be up for grabs in the three-day competition.
Meanwhile, from 14:00hrs today, GCF will move the first pawn in its first Female ChessKid competition.
Players, from as young as seven to their mid-teens, will battle in the online event which will be held over seven rounds.
The youngsters will battle in a time control of 10 minutes. Players must be registered on chesskid.com to participate.
