THREE more women, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), succumbed while receiving medical care between May 13 and 14, a statement released by the Ministry of Health has confirmed.
Two of the now deceased women, aged 80 and 72, were residents of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), while the third, aged 40, was from Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne). The total number of COVID-19 deaths is now 338, with 39 of those recorded for this month.
The Ministry of Health has also recorded 180 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,053 tests.
Of that total, Region One (Barima-Waini) recorded four; Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam), six; Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 30; Region Four, Demerara-Mahaica 98; Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), 20; Region Six (East Berbice-Curentyne, two; Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), two; Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni), one; Region Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo), five, and Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice), 12.
The newly infected persons were 82 males and 98 females.
Presently, 16 persons occupy the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while 106 are institutionally isolated, 1,822 are isolated at home, and ten are institutionally quarantined.
Of Guyana’s 15,168 confirmed cases since the arrival of COVID-19 here, 1,954 are currently active, while 52 of the 12,886 recoveries were recorded within the past 24 hours.
All Guyanese are urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining the six feet physical distance from others, and the need for good hand hygiene to help curb the spread of COVID-19.
The Minister of Health has also urged persons 18 years and older to take the COVID-19 vaccine, to immunize themselves against the deadly virus.
