EFFORTS are currently being made by the Anna Regina Town Council (ARTC) and the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) to identify pastures for the countless donkeys that are roaming the township’s public road.

This disclosure was made by Mayor of Anna Regina, Rajendra Prabhulall, during a recent interview with the Guyana Chronicle.

Given the noticeable increase in donkeys on the Anna Regina Public Road in the last few months, he said members of the ARTC and the RDC will be inspecting lands in the “MCR” backlands where the animals will be taken after being impounded.

The mayor said a stern warning was issued to the persons rearing cows and sheep in the township, as these animals are oftentimes seen roaming.

He informed this publication that the council’s stray catchers are often threatened by the owners of these stray animals whenever they go out to round them up. Because of this situation, the stray catchers are most times unable to execute their tasks, he added.

Given the number of animals the stray catchers have to impound, the council is looking to acquire a low-bed truck.

Meanwhile, Prabhulall singled out a woman in the town who is rearing over 100 head of sheep. He explained to this publication that the animals are creating issues for the council. The council recently met with the woman and she has promised to sell some of the animals.

Additionally, discussions are being held to identify pastures to accommodate stray cattle.

Several businessmen in the township have complained about stray animals destroying parts of their premises. The stray animals are also a major threat to the town’s hospitality sector.

As recent as Sunday, a hotelier vented his frustration to this publication. He said stray cows would defecate in front of his hotel and members of his staff are the ones who have to remove it to ensure that the front of the hotel is a pleasing sight for potential guests and visitors and is stench-free.

Several other business owners expressed similar concerns and related that it was time the town council steps in and implement measures to deal with stray cattle roaming around the town.

Businessmen noted that the messy scene in front of their businesses is not a pleasant sight for the countless persons who visit the town on a daily basis.
