OMKAR Kishundyal, 64, of Canal No.2 Polder, West Bank Demerara, who had armed himself with a hammer, was killed by another man with a cutlass during a confrontation on Sunday afternoon.
The police said that about 14:30hrs on Sunday, Kishundyal, who was under the influence of alcohol, went to the suspect’s home at Belle West, Canal No.2 Polder, with a hammer.
There, he began to behave disorderly and threatened to kill the suspect and his family over some work which the suspect’s father was supposed to have done at his home.
According to the police, Kishundyal ran into the suspect’s yard and began to lash at him with the hammer.
The suspect then picked up a chair to shield himself from the blows but Kishundyal reportedly wrestled the chair away from him.
The police said the suspect released the chair and armed himself with a cutlass. The suspect claimed that he used the cutlass as a shield against the hammer when Kishundyal sustained a cut to his right hand.
At this point, the police said Kishundyal retreated from the suspect’s premises before collapsing some 600 feet away.
He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital and later died. The suspect was arrested and remains in custody.
An autopsy done on Monday revealed that Kishundyal died of haemorrhage and shock due to an incise wound to the forearm.
The body has since been handed over to relatives for funeral arrangements.
