… shortlists team for Caribbean Elite Men’s Time Trials, Road Race

THE Guyana Cycling Federation (GCF) is hoping that it will get approval for next month’s National Cycling Championships, since the three-leg event will not only decide Guyana’s current best cyclists, but it will also help to select the national team that will travel to the Caribbean Elite Men’s Time Trials and Road Race Championships.
That event is scheduled for June 11-12 in Havana, Cuba.

On Friday the GCF announced the 10 shortlisted cyclists – Jamual John, Briton John, Andrew Hicks, Christopher Griffith, Marcus Keiler, Alex Mendes, Deeraj Garbarran, Michael Anthony, Scott Savory and Raynauth Jeffrey.

The last two are based in the US. They, along with Jamual John and Anthony who travel regularly, are all members of Team Foundation, based in New York.
John is a dominant rider, who is in form after he surged to a 60-mile victory last Sunday from Georgetown to Mahaicony and back.

Raynauth also won a competition yesterday in the US, but despite their current form, the Team Foundation cyclists will all have to compete in Guyana to earn a selection.
This was confirmed by Racing Secretary of the Guyana Cycling Federation, Malcolm Sonaram, yesterday. He said that “nothing is automatic.”

The 10 cyclists will be judged on their performance at next month’s Nationals and at the Independence Four-Stage Race.
Five of them will be cut after the events.

“We are eagerly anticipating our approval for the National Championships,” Sonaram said, adding that the cyclists have already stated that they will compete in the necessary events.
The National Championships are set for late next month with May 22, 23 and 30 allocated for a Time Trials, Senior Road Race and Junior, Female and Veteran Road Race respectively.

The three-leg event, which includes a 10-miler, a 100-miler, and an unconfirmed distance, will depend on the approval of the Task Force.
To date nothing has been confirmed.
