– Says singing sensation Diana Chapman
POPULAR music personality Diana Chapman, whom fans love to tune into daily on the radio, wants to take things up a notch by registering herself as an artist so that she can continue to do her music more professionally. “I should have done this a long time ago but I believe that everything happens at the right time,” the Linden-born diva told the Buzz in an interview this week.
Apart from her radio announcing job, Chapman is currently working to create new music which is expected to be released shortly and is also working to have her music available on all streaming sites. Growing up, she always nurtured a desire to become a lawyer as he found the profession very intriguing. She still hopes to be able to pursue her dream in some form, but in the meantime, she is continuing to make a name for herself in the music industry.
Chapman’s career in music started as a result of her love for dancing. She recalls that during her primary school days, she participated in the Children’s Mashramani competitions each year. “So I would say my first love was dance and then came music,” she said.

She can still remember how she was greatly impacted by world-renowned artistes Beyonce and Michael Jackson. “I never thought that singing would become something that I really wanted to do. It was until I saw Beyonce on stage and Michael Jackson and I thought they were so amazing and performed with so much energy and vibe and sang so beautifully. I started to imitate them.” Chapman found herself in front of the television watching their music videos and learning the choreography of them and that’s where her interest in performing on stage started. So she thought she should try singing too as she was already dancing. Chapman began performing on small stage shows in Linden and one year, she got a call asking for her to be a contestant in the junior calypso competition. She had no interest in calypso but she nevertheless tried and got second in the competition. She went back the second year and took the crown and became the junior calypso monarch. From that year forward, Chapman gained the confidence she needed to participate in several national competitions. “It has been a really great ride performing and singing and having fun doing it. Music has always been part of my life but it sprang from my love for dancing,” Chapman expressed, adding,

“Music always sparked something inside me that made me feel very lively; it puts me in a different zone. So when I started singing, it made it even better; I have the opportunity now to create the beats I would have inspired.” Chapman said because she loves her work so much, it never feels like she is working too hard. “I can work all night on a performance and not feel like it’s a burden because that’s what I like to do. It’s my safe space and my comfort. I don’t think I am here for anything else other than to create music,” she said.
Apart from copping senior and junior calypso monarch titles in the past, Chapman has also placed second and third in several other competitions. She was awarded the outstanding youth in the field of arts and culture in Linden and has represented Guyana at Carifesta in Haiti and Trinidad. Her trip to Kazakhstan at the World Expo in 2017 has also been very memorable. She further placed third in the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph’s (GT&T) Jingle and Song competition in 2013.
Chapman is a radio announcer at Mix FM, and broadcasts on 103. 3 in Linden; 91.5 in Berbice; and 90.1 in Georgetown and Demerara.
