TWO men, both aged 66, of Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica), on Wednesday, succumbed to COVID-19 while receiving treatment at a Ministry of Health facility. Theirs mark the 14th and 15th such deaths for March 2021, and take the overall toll to 212.
In the meantime, the Health Ministry has recorded 120 new cases of COVID-19 from 1,107 tests conducted on March 17, 2021. Of these, Region Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) recorded one; Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), 11; Region Four, 77; Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice), eight; Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), three; Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), 17; and Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice), three. No other region has confirmed new cases within the past 24 hours. To date, seven persons have been admitted to the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU); 46 are institutionally isolated; 747 are confined to their homes; while eight are institutionally quarantined.
Guyana has a total of 9,442 confirmed cases since the arrival of COVID-19 on these shores. Of that number, 808 are currently active, and of the 8,430 recoveries, 89 were recorded within the past 24 hours.
All Guyanese are urged to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which emphasise the need for correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving home, the importance of maintaining the six-foot physical distance from others, and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of COVID-19.
