
THE High Court trial of Mark Lowchee, called “Mark Lee”, who is accused of fatally shooting a man outside the Blue Iguana nightclub in 2003, commenced on Monday before a 12-member jury. Lowchee, who is partly handicapped due to a stroke to his left side and uses a cane for assistance, pleaded not guilty to the charge which read that on September 21, 2003, at Fifth and Light Streets, Alberttown, Georgetown, he murdered Collis DeAbreu. Justice Navindra Singh is presiding over the trial at the Demerara High Court. According to reports, on the day in question, there was a misunderstanding between Lowchee and the owner of the nightclub over a glass belonging to the Blue Iguana. It is further alleged that Lowchee pulled out a gun and discharged several rounds in the vicinity of the nightclub, hitting De Abreu to the chest and injuring other patrons. De Abreu was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and was pronounced dead on arrival.
