WHILE many businesses are downsizing their operations due to the effects of COVID-19 pandemic, Imam Bacchus and Sons Limited has invested approximately GYD$100 million in the township of Anna Regina on the Essequibo Coast by opening a third branch of its operation on Friday at Cotton Field, Region Two.
As a result of the dreaded disease, the Board of Directors did not have a ceremonial opening ceremony and so, the doors of the two-storey state-of-the-art building was officially opened to customers on Friday.
Apart from the supermarket, the fully air-conditioned building also houses a a food court, a pre-school and daycare centre on the upper flat. The centre, however, will only become operational when the necessary permission is granted by the COVID-19 ministerial task force and the Ministry of Education.
According to the Corporate Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and Chairman of the Board of Directors, Adil Baksh, the company was propelled to open its new location due to the tremendous growth evident in the town of Anna Regina.

During an interview with the Sunday Chronicle, Baksh said the Board of Directors took a leap after learning that a portion of land was available in the community. As such, the directors decided to lobby the owner of the land and made a proposal to rent it on a long-term basis.

Baksh explained that based on internal studies conducted by the company, it is projected that the economy within the township of Anna Regina will blossom in the coming years. The new branch has already created job opportunities for some 30 persons who will join a workforce of 350 employees that are already employed by the corporation.

Imam Bacchus and Sons intend to increase its workforce to 400 employees by the end of 2021. The company believes in improving its human resource capacity and, as such, there are continuous training and mentoring of staff members in the various fields of the company.

The supermarket currently boasts some of the finest equipment, a food court, the finest line of Halall fresh meat, complemented with courteous and friendly staff. Customers can shop in a fully air-conditioned environment while in the town. The supermarket will maintain its policy of not offering any alcoholic beverages to the public.

Meanwhile, the food court will provide customers with honey roasted chicken, fried chicken, burgers, pizza and local cuisine along with cappuccino, slushi, milkshakes, ice coffees, and even sushi.
“We will have everything under one roof; there is a supermarket, a food court, a pre-school, and also a daycare. We are catering to meet the masses and they can come and enjoy the clean setting provided at Bacchus,” Baksh told this newspaper.
