371 COVID recoveries recorded within the past week

THE Ministry of Health has recorded 371 COVID-19 recoveries for the period January 31 to February 6, with 2,449 tests being carried out during that time, according to the daily COVID-19 dashboard.

While the number of recoveries is fairly high, the number of new COVID cases is almost as high, with a total of 298 cases confirmed within the past week alone. Of these new cases, 167 (56%) are males, and 131 (44%) are females.

Over the past 24 hours, the ministry has confirmed 52 new cases, three of which were recorded in Region One (Barima-Waini); six in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara); and 16 in Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica). Conversely, three new cases were confirmed in Region Five (Mahaica-Berbice); four in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne); two in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni); three in Region Eight (Potaro-Siparuni); and 15 in Region Ten (Upper Demerara-Berbice). No new cases were recorded in Regions Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and Nine (Upper Takutu-Upper Essequibo).

There are currently five persons in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 54 in institutional isolation, 738 in home isolation, and 14 in institutional quarantine. This brings the number of active cases to 811.

Guyana has thus far recorded 180 COVID-19 fatalities.
As the number of cases continues to climb, all Guyanese are reminded to observe the protocols of the COVID-19 emergency measures, which are in effect until February 28, 2021. This order emphasises: The need for the correct and consistent use of a face mask when leaving your home; the importance of maintaining the six-foot physical distance from others, and the need for good hand-hygiene to help reduce the spread of the virus.
