THE Guyana Chess Federation will today host two online chess competitions for advanced juniors and youngsters now learning the game. The Chess in Schools January Championship will be held over seven rounds with 10 minutes plus five-second increments. Both competitions, which are scheduled to start at 14:00hrs, will target U-20 players. Competition A is tailor-made for players with ratings above 1100, while Competition B would target players with ratings 0-1099. According to Chairman of GCF’s Chess-in-Schools Committee, Anand Raghunauth, the competitions will be used to help advance players who were training or those who have just started to train. “It’s to help keep the more established players active and have the players below 1100 compete and improve their games.” One of the positives is that Indian International Master, Atanu Lahiri has recommenced training, which has already improved many of our youngsters’ game play.

Raghunauth noted that the online competition would become monthly battles to assess the improvement of the players.
Adding to that, coach Lahiri, who is a former Commonwealth chess champion, with stints as head coach of Nepal (2005) and Bhutan (2014) before he took charge of the Indian Youth, Junior and Cadet teams, will facilitate inter-country competitions.
The Chess in Schools head noted that Lahiri is only waiting for more of our youngsters to improve.
“It is definitely going to happen. The trainer has persons whom he trains in India and will set up engagement so that our players can play Indian players with the same ratings.”
Some 40 Guyanese students are currently training with the Indian coach.
