FOUR ranks of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) were, on Friday, lauded for their quick response in getting a sick child, who was in an emergency situation, to the hospital.
On Wednesday, while on duty, the ranks encountered a young woman who was desperately trying to get her child to the hospital for urgent medical attention during the busy mid-morning rush hour.

The ranks where approached and told of the situation. They immediately swung into action and with their flashing lights and police sirens were able to clear the heavy traffic so that the vehicle transporting the woman and her child could have made its way quickly to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC).
Akash Persaud, who was at the time accompanying the woman and her child, recounted that while en route to the hospital, they encountered heavy traffic. Even though he was driving with his hazard lights on, an indication to other drivers that there was an emergency, no one showed any consideration.
“We left the office and got the child, but the traffic was crazy, being in the middle of the mid-day rush. Though I had on my ‘hazard’, no one seems to care and one guy even cussed about my urgency,” he related.

However, Persaud observed a police vehicle nearby and approached the ranks explaining the situation and urgency. The ranks without hesitation provided assistance by escorting Persaud, his colleague and the sick child to the hospital.
“In the heat of it all, I saw a police vehicle approaching. I gestured for them to stop [and] they did. I told them of the situation at hand and requested that they give us an ‘escort’ to GPHC – A&E. In no time and no questions asked, they turned the vehicle around, put on the siren and got us to the A&E gate. [They] even asked the guard to open the gate so that I can drive in. I did not get the names of any of those four gentlemen, nor the number on the vehicle, they left immediately,” he added.
Persaud praised and thanked the ranks for their assistance. “I say, thank you, this is what service & protection is,” he said.
