POLICE Commander of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), Superintendent Jairam Ramlakhan, has advised newly promoted ranks in his division to have a passion for their job and care for the people they serve, noting that these traits will have an impact on their reputations.

On Friday, the commander and his administrative team hosted a ceremony at the New Amsterdam Police Station for 17 junior ranks who were promoted. In that batch, Police Constable Ramesh Chetram was promoted to corporal after 23 years in the force, along with his colleague, Beharry Jaigopaul, who was promoted to corporal after 19 years.

Commissioner of Police (ag), Nigel Hoppie is responsible for all promotions up to the rank of sergeant.
“To those who have not been promoted, I urge that you be patient and murmur not, one day you will reap your reward,” Hoppie said in his New Year Message.

Meanwhile, the New Amsterdam Station Management Committee also hosted a dinner for the ranks. Noting that a promotion is the advancement of an employee’s rank or position in the organisational hierarchy, the commander and his administrative team met with the newly promoted ranks and congratulated them on their upward mobility.

The commander reiterated to the ranks that they are required to execute their respective duties effectively and efficiently at all times. He noted that law enforcement should always set out to make a positive difference while building trust internally and externally, which he noted are key aspects of policing.

When contacted, Commander Ramlakhan told the Sunday Chronicle that he wants all ranks to understand that professional policing promotes the rule of law, supports economic growth and improves the lives of all.
“Service is something all law-enforcement officers know they must professionally provide to the communities in which they serve. This community service is necessary,” he noted.

He added: “Ranks need to be coached in order to become better and more comfortable in their positions, and, at times, they need to be motivated to continue pursuing outstanding performance and congratulated on reaching successful goals.”
