Recognising that poetry and art nourish the soul of the world through beauty, wisdom and truth, young poet, 25-year-old, Tarik Braithwaite, seeks to offer young people a sense of belonging through his recently launched book of poems, “Trapped in Thought”.

“Profound poets like Anne Sexton, Walt Whitman and T.S.Elliot have been my biggest inspirations. They made me fall in love with the art form and the culture behind it. I started studying their work and it is from them I’ve mastered the laws of poetry,” Tarik conveyed.
‘Trapped in thought” is a motivational poetic non-fiction book that offers readers a collection of confessional verses in the form of poetry. Each poem follows a sequence leading up to the ideal poem, which is the very last piece in the book, that facilitates readers through a range of stages in the author’s life and offers them a synopsis on how poetry has aided him in becoming the person he is to date.

The book targets persons who may just need a bit of motivation to get through each day and anyone now learning to live in his/ her truth by overcoming life’s many challenges.
Braithwaite specified that after reading his book, the average person should feel a sense of worth and completeness and a deeper desire for purpose through his poetry which he refers to as “his truth”.
When asked about the difficulties he faced during the compilation of the book, Braithwaite expressed that he recalls numerous difficulties from the beginning of the project up until its completion.
“Support from our country’s superiors. It was hard seeking advice. Additionally, editing this book was proven difficult since most of the skill I had to teach myself. I was also scrutinised for my goal and it was difficult having most people on board. I had to face unfair contractual arrangements with publishers since my inexperience to the field led to their advantage,” he expressed.
Additionally, when asked about his future endeavours, Tarik responded, “Writing will forever be a hobby and so long as I’m alive I will continue to put out more of my work. I’m putting out two now and I hope to one day complete my Law certificate, and soon put out a few more books within the field of poetry. I also plan on mentoring as many persons out there to help them establish their voice, name and sound,” he said. .

In advising up-and-coming young writers, Braithwaite implored them to face fear and doubt head-on and to never let it stop them from sharing their stories.
“Life is short and our talents were meant to be used for the good of mankind. Use it! Don’t be afraid to get out there and chase that dream. A writer’s blockage is his mind and once you can overcome fear and build the confidence you will fly. Keep writing, keep persevering, stay focused on your goal and pursue it,” he encouraged.
