THE Ministry of Education has provided three siblings with special education needs with two electronic tablets to assist them with learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The children, eight-year-old Shaquan Peters, 13-year-old Shakira Peters and 15-year-old Shalda Peters, all hail from Region 10, Linden.
The Ministry of Education, in a press release, noted that the children’s mother, Nicola Peters, reached out directly to subject minister, Priya Manickchand, on social media for assistance in this regard.
“The mother explained that Shakira has not been to school for many years since she can only move around in a wheelchair or if she is assisted to do so. Notwithstanding her challenges, the mother explained that she (Shakira) ‘catches on’ quickly and the tablet will go a far way in ensuring that the child continues to learn.
“In relation to the other children, the parent explained that Shaquan attends One Mile Primary School while Shalda attends the Special Needs School in Linden,” the release from the ministry revealed.
The children received the two Tablets from the Permanent Secretary, Alfred King, on Monday at the Ministry’s Brickdam head office.
According to the release, King noted that the ministry will continue to assist where possible. He said that the Minister of Education is passionate about ensuring that learning loss is significantly reduced among learners during the pandemic.
