AUTHORITIES in the mining town of Bartica, nestled in the heart of Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni), has implemented a restriction of movement in an effort to curb the surge in COVID-19 cases that have been plaguing the town over the past month.
Since recording its first case on June 24, 2020, there has been a steady increase in COVID-19 cases in the community. Bartica has recorded a total of 471 cases, 64 being active cases and 11 persons losing their lives to this scourge.
Mayor of Bartica, Gifford Marshall, during an exclusive telephone interview with the Guyana Chronicle, on Thursday, related that the town has not been locked down but, based on the gazetted order, travel to and from Bartica is restricted and the curfew hours remain the same.
“The Council will continue to move forward with their sensitisation programme and we will also ask for some support from the Local Government Ministry in terms of our sensitisation programme,” the mayor said.
