Trio who reportedly robbed businessman of over $3M granted bail

THREE men who allegedly robbed a Corentyne Berbice businessman of over $3M were granted bail when they appeared at the Whim Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

Quacy Fung-A-Fat, 40, a labourer of Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD); 58-year-old Afzal Khan, a taxi driver of Chateau Margot (ECD); and Jason Staunton, 32, a labourer of Samatta Point, East Bank Demerara (EBD), were all charged with simple larceny.
They pleaded not guilty to the charge and were released on $250,000 bail each; the accused were ordered to lodge their passports and to report to the Brickdam Police Station every Friday.

The case was transferred to the No. 51 Magistrate’s Court and the trio is slated to re-appear on December 23, 2020.
The Guyana Chronicle had reported that quick action by ranks of the Guyana Police Force led to the arrest of three suspects who allegedly robbed the 42-year-old businessman of over G$3 million, as well as $7,270 in Surinamese currency on Friday last.

The theft occurred at Number 66 Village, Corentyne, Berbice around 10:15hrs. Police Headquarters, in a statement, noted that Deonarine Harripersaud, called “Chona”, who is a businessman and a boat owner, visited two commercial banks in Corentyne, Berbice, earlier in the day and withdrew the money, after which he made several payments to his employees in the Corentyne area.

He left the cash in a haversack in the front seat of his vehicle as he made way into the Number 66 Fishing Complex to drop off a tool for his workers who were fixing his boat.
Upon his return to the vehicle, the businessman noticed that the haversack was missing, and further checks found that the lock on the passenger side was tampered with.

Harripersaud received information that a white Toyota Allion car stopped next to his vehicle and someone went into the car and took out his haversack. The businessman then made a report at the #51 Police Station.
Based on intelligence received, ranks went to Liverpool Village, Corentyne, Berbice and stopped a white Toyota Allion car, which was proceeding west on the said public road, with the suspects inside.

“They were told of their suspicion, arrested and escorted to the Whim Police Station where a search was conducted on their persons and the said motor car. Police found, on the front passenger seat, a grey haversack which contained a quantity of Guyana and Suriname dollars,” the police report noted.

Police also recovered Harripersaud’s passport and bank books.
