Two remanded for cutlass robbery

KENNETH Lee Young and Deon Charles, on Monday, appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with robbing a man, while they were armed with a cutlass. They were remanded to prison.

Young, of Hunter Street, Albouystown and Charles, of Middle Road, La Penitence, both pleaded not guilty to the joint charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs – Marcus.

It is alleged that on October 29, at Lombard Street, Georgetown, while being armed with a cutlass, they robbed Brian Mohabir of one haversack valued $5000, and $5500 cash.

Prosecutor Inniss told the court that the accused are known to the police. She informed that on the day in question, Mohabir was walking along Lombard Street when a cutlass was placed to his neck by the accused, who allegedly demanded that he hand over his valuables. The two then made good their escape on two blue ‘Mountain’ bicycles.

The matter was reported to the police and the two accused were subsequently identified to the police by Mohabir. The prosecutor stated that following their arrest, one of the accused, under caution, admitted that he carried out the armed robbery. Further investigations were carried out and the stolen money was allegedly found in their possession.

Meanwhile, Young was charged with a second cutlass robbery.

It is alleged that he, on October 28, at Merriman’s Mall, Georgetown, while in the company of others and armed with a cutlass, robbed Christopher Ramsammy of one IPhone 7 valued $65,000, and $25,000 cash.

Young denied the allegation.

Prosecutor Inniss told the court that on the day in question, about 7:00hrs, Ramsammy was proceeding along Alexander Street when, in the vicinity of Merriman’s Mall, he was accosted by Young and three other accomplices. Young pulled out a cutlass and placed same to Ramsammy’s chest before relieving him of his valuables.

Young was subsequently arrested. He was, reportedly, positively identified by Ramsammy during an identification parade.

The matters were adjourned to November 30.
