Ruimveldt youth granted bail on armed robbery charges

TWENTY-ONE-YEAR-OLD Joshua Evans, last Friday, appeared before the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court charged with two counts of robbery under arms.

Evans known as “Joshy” and of West Front Road, Ruimveldt, pleaded not guilty to the charges which were read to him by Magistrate Delon Bess.

It is alleged that on August 26, 2020, at Fourth Street, La Penitence, Georgetown, while being armed with a knife, he robbed Larry Singh of one iPhone 7 valued $200,000 and $5000 cash.

The facts presented to the court are that Singh and Evans have been familiar with each other for over 10 years. On the day in question, Singh left his shop located on Middle Road, La Penitence and headed to his home located at Fourth Street, La Penitence. Whilst walking, a knife was placed to his neck allegedly by Evans, who forced him to relinquish his valuables. Evans was later arrested and charged.

The second charge alleged that on July 1, 2020 at Hibiscus Street, East Ruimveldt, Evans being in company of another and armed with an offensive weapon, specifically a cutlass, robbed Shawn Thompson of one Samsung cellular phone valued $35,000 and $7,700 cash.

According to the facts of the case, Evans and his accomplice are strangers to Thompson. On the day in question, the accused robbed Thompson of his valuables and made good his escape. Evans was later arrested and charged.

Magistrate Bess granted Evans $150,000 bail on the first charge and $70,000 bail on the second.

The matter was adjourned to November 13 and transferred to Court Two.

Evans was previously charged with similar offences and is currently under investigation for several others.
