QUICK action by ranks on duty at the Lusignan Prison on the East Coast of Demerara prevented two prisoners from being “executed” on Friday night, according to Director of Prisons, Gladwin Samuels.

A statement from Samuels revealed that Aszim Shivgobin, also known as ‘Blackie’, a 23-year-old inmate of Holding Bay Two, is in a “clinically stable” condition after he was brutally attacked and chopped by two prisoners at around 22:15hrs on Friday.

Shivgobin is on remand for the murder of Canadian citizen, 23-year-old Nicholas Ramkissoon Jaipaul.

Shivogbin sustained lacerations to all extremities and chest, the Prison Director said, noting that he was able to identify his attackers while other prisoners also identified these same persons as Shivgobin’s attackers.
“Quick response by Officers on duty with the assistance of other prisoners thwarted an attack on a second prisoner and resulted in both lives being saved. The improvised weapon reportedly used has been retrieved,” Samuels said in his statement.
He further noted, “It is alleged that Shivgobin and the other prisoner were targeted for execution by another prisoner.”
The matter has been reported to the Police and will be fully investigated so that charges can be laid against the relevant persons, the Prison Director noted.
Shivgobin is charged along with 26-year-old Charran Sewdhan, also known as ‘Vickey’ and 56-year-old Moonasar Beharry with Jaipaul’s murder.

Jaipaul arrived in Guyana in January with his grandfather, 86-year-old Ramkissoon Jaipaul.

The duo was residing at the grandfather’s house in Number 69 Village, Corentyne, and was expected to leave the country in May but remained here after the airports were closed to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
The young Jailpaul disappeared from the house sometime between August 16 and 17.

On August 20, the remains of Jaipaul were discovered in some bushes along the Molesen Creek main access road after the prime suspect confessed to the crime and led investigators to the location.
