– B team takes top honours in SCA Third Division

By Frederick Halley
TORONTO, Canada – One week after their Elite team were crowned champions in Division One, Ambassadors Sports Club B brought more joy for the club when the Scarborough Cricket Association (SCA) 2020 season climaxed here over the last weekend.

Like their Division One counterparts, the debutant Third Division side also entered the final encounter versus Toronto 6ixers needing a win to seal the Group B title which had eluded them the previous weekend with a loss to Toronto Seawolves.

The victory took the Christopher Singh-led Ambassadors B to the top of the group with 70 points, five ahead of Toronto Seawolves who placed second on 65. Kokuvil Sports Club and Toronto Lead both ended on 40 points while Toronto 6ixers had 35.

The winners of Group A were still undecided following a disputed game between leaders Phoenix Kerala (75 points) and Tpark Youngstars (70). The issue is expected to be settled shortly.
Winning the toss and opting to bat in overcast conditions at the Ajax Cricket Ground on Saturday, Ambassadors B reached an imposing 235 for five, which included 16 penalty runs, after Toronto 6ixers only bowled 28 of the required 30 overs in the allotted two hours playing time.

Toronto 6ixers never threatened in their turn at the crease and were routed for 108 in 22.1 overs, going down by the huge margin of 127 runs.
The platform for Ambassadors B winning total was laid by openers Mukesh Samaroo (83) and Navin Seelochand (21), the two adding 99 in 16.5 overs before Seelochand (two fours) went caught at cover by Umair Choksi off Safran Lafeer.

Samaroo, whose fine knock included 11 fours and a six, added a further 46 off just 19 balls for the third wicket with the hard-hitting Nicholus Jacobs who smoked five fours and three
sixes in a destructive 52 off 27 balls. Four bowlers – Amandeep Gill, Arora Sahib, Kutral Veerabadran and Safran Lafeer took a wicket each.

Toronto 6ixers were never up to the task, losing wickets at regular intervals before succumbing meekly. Opener Veerabadran (26 with four fours), Sugaanthan Sriskandarajah (26 with four fours) and skipper Arsalan Mian (21 with two fours and a six) were the main contributors. Medium pacer, Kevin Baijnauth, was the main destroyer with three for six from 3.1 overs while Ryan Ramnarine (one for 10), Neil Ramkissoon (one for 23), Kenny Girdharry (one for 27) and Saif Basheer (one for 27) lend admirable support.

Seelochand, who played all 10 matches, ended the season with the most runs for the winners, tallying 307 with three half-centuries, his highest being 60 for an average of 30.90.
Samaroo played nine matches, scored 235 runs with one half-century (83), averaging 29.38. Guyanese-born Girdharry, who was part of the West Indies Over-50 side in South Africa earlier this year, hit 201 runs and missed out on a century after being dismissed for 99. His average was 22.33.

The bowling was led by Ryan Ramnarine who took 15 wickets in his 10 matches with an economy rate of 3.67. Baijnauth claimed 13 in nine matches (economy 6.02), Neil Ramkissoon 12 from six matches (economy 6.25) and Mark Williams eleven from nine (economy 5.18).

The club is being led by dynamic president, Ronald Ramnarine, whose parents are Guyanese. While expressing delight at both teams’ performances in the 2020 season, Ramnarine said credit must be given to this year’s debutant Elite League captain, Amerish ‘Kevin’ Deoraj.

Ramnarine described Deoraj as a true leader on and off the field who led his squad to winning supremacy with 7-2 record, leading from the front with his bowling. Deoraj’s 16 scalps came at an economy rate of 4.77.
